Before I say why, I need to apologize to Mr. Date.

This book shows you what a real relational product would be like, and how and why it would be so much better than whats currently available. With this unique book, you will: Learn All of today’s mainstream database products support the SQL language, and relational theory is what SQL is supposed to be based on/5.   SQL and Relational Theory How to Write Accurate SQL Code C.J. Date / O'REILLY This is the best SQL book I have read so far! I have read many SQL books but this one beats every single one of them. This book is about how you can apply relational theory directly to your use of SQL. My favorite chapter was chapter 1 it teaches SQL terminology/5(4).

SQL is full of difficulties and traps for the unwary. You can avoid them if you understand relational theory, but only if you know how to put that theory into practice.

Date, is intended to give database practitioners an introduction to relational theory and its relationship with the SQL standard and syntax. The book accomplishes this goal but not in a clean way.

The author has a lot to say about the SQL standard, much of /5. In this insightful book, author C.J. Date explains relational theory in depth, and demonstrates through numerous examples and exercises how you can apply it directly to your use of SQL.

This second edition includes new material on recursive queries, “missing information” without nulls, new update operators, and topics such as aggregate 4/5(10).

I bought two of 's book, one being SQL and Relational Theory (How to Write Accurate SQL code) hoping to find something new as the title suggested. However, looking at the table of contents of both the books, i find the same content is repeated in his new book (SQL and Relational Theory)/5(33).

Second, most books try to use SQL as a vehicle for teaching relational theory, but this book deliberately takes the opposite approach. Its primary aim is to teach relational theory as such.

Then it uses that theory as a vehicle for teaching SQL, showing in particular how that theory can help with the practical problem of using SQL correctly and Cited by: 2. Understanding SQL's underlying theory is the best way to guarantee that your SQL code is correct and your database schema is robust and maintainable.

On the other hand, if you're - Selection from SQL and Relational Theory [Book]. SQL and Relational Theory How to Write Accurate SQL Code C.J. Date / O'REILLY This is the best SQL book I have read so far.

I have read many SQL books but this one beats every single one of them. This book is about how you can apply relational theory directly to your use of SQL.

My favorite chapter was chapter 1 it teaches SQL terminology/5. This book is a good introduction to relational theory. I found it helpful, along with Wikipedia and other online reference material, in learning the normal forms and what they really mean.

It is highly theoretical, which I can relate to, holding a bachelor's degree in mathematics. EMPTY SETS The empty set is the set containing no elements.

This concept is both ubiquitous and extremely important in the relational world, but SQL commits a number of errors - Selection from SQL and Relational Theory, 2nd Edition [Book]. A relational approach to SQL: That’s the theme, or one of the themes, of this book. Of course, to treat such a topic adequately, I need to cover relational issues as well as issues of SQL per se—and while this remark obviously applies to the book as a whole, it applies to this first chapter with special force.

SCALAR vs. NONSCALAR TYPES It’s usual to think of types as being either scalar or nonscalar. Loosely, a type is scalar if it has no user visible components and nonscalar - Selection from SQL and Relational Theory, 2nd Edition [Book].

Probably Chris Date's work is where you'd want to start if you want to get deep into the theory of it all. If you're just looking for basic design, reading wikipedia is enough to get you 80% of the way there IF you follow the rules pretty strictl.

ARELATIONAL APPROACH TO SQL: THAT’S THE THEME, OR ONE OF THE THEMES, OF THIS course, to treat such a topic adequately, I need to cover relational issues as well as issues of SQL per se—and while this remark obviously applies to the book as a whole, it applies to this first chapter with special force.

Chapter 4. No Duplicates, No Nulls IN THE PREVIOUS CHAPTER, I SAID THE FOLLOWING (APPROXIMATELY): Relations never contain duplicate tuples, because the body of a relation is a set - Selection from SQL and Relational Theory [Book]. This book introduces you to the theory of relational databases, focusing on the application of that theory to the design of computer languages that properly embrace it.

The book is intended for those studying relational databases as a part of a degree course in Information Technology (IT)/5(22). Examples throughout the rest of this book are based for the most part on the foregoing database. Now, you might well have seen this database before—I’ve used it in several other books and writings, including SQL and Relational Theory in particular, [] as well as in numerous live presentations—and you might be forgiven for getting a little tired of it.

The Database Relational Model: A Retrospective Review and Analysis, ISBN SQL and Relational Theory, 2nd Edition: How to Write Accurate SQL Code, ISBN In recent years he has published articles with Fabian Pascal at Database mater: University of Cambridge.

What it is about is the theory that underpins the whole approach to database that is typified by SQL and other relational databases. If you have thought about SQL as "just another language" or relational databases as some sort of marketing idea you might be surprised to discover that the whole subject started out as an attempt to provide mathematical rigour to database theory.
